The Lady Roadrunners are clinging to a top 16 overall seed hoping to host a first-round state playoff game later this month. Last week they split their two home games helping that cause.

Hosting Alchesay on Tuesday night, Holbrook got 6 quick points from Channing Harrington and 3 from Chelsey Begaye off the bench, helping build a 13-12 lead. Holbrook’s defense clamped down in the second, limiting the Falcons to just 4 points while Jordan Claw nailed a pair of treys giving Holbrook a 26-16 halftime lead.

Holbrook kept up the defense in the third and fourth, holding the Falcons to just 16 second-half points to win the game 51-32.

Holbrook had balanced scoring with three players scoring 9 points. Harrington, Claw and Alayna Yazzie each reached that total. Begaye added 6; Angelica Uranga-Williams, 5; Bailey Williams, 4; Shayla Attakai, 3; Lanaya Tsosie, 2; KC Tsosie, 2; and Holly Casamero added 2 in the win.

“I felt this was one of our better defensive games. The girls played well and if we can hold teams under 40 points, we have a good chance to win games,” stated Coach Greg Perkins.

Friday night Holbrook hosted a determined Snowflake Lobo team, which came out on fire hoping to avenge an earlier season loss to the Roadrunners. Snowflake jumped out to a 27-6 lead in the first eight minutes, shooting the ball better from distance than they have all season. By halftime, the margin was 39-14. Holbrook played much better in the second half, trimming the lead to 12 but in the end, they lost 64-46.

“Obviously Snowflake started well. We haven’t seen them shoot that well all season, but they did in the first half. I thought the girls battled tough winning the second half, but the hole was too big to come out of. Deya really stepped up in the final two quarters and hopefully, she can play that strong the rest of the way,” noted Coach Perkins.

Deya Guerrero played well for Holbrook, finishing with 18 points. Seventeen of those came in the second half. Harrington added 9, all in the second half. Yazzie scored 7; Claw, 5; Bailey Williams, 5; Angelica Uranga-Williams, 2; and Begaye added two.

With the loss, Holbrook dropped back to 12-13 overall and they are now 6-9 in regular season games. With the toughness of their strength of schedule, they will remain in the 16th position with the rankings updated on Tuesday. If they can win in their final two games, they should stay in that spot and possibly host a first-round state playoff game. Two losses this week will more than likely drop them out of the top 16.

Holbrook travels to Alchesay on Tuesday for an afternoon game starting at 2 p.m. On Wednesday they will host fourth ranked Show Low on senior night at Munoz Gym.
