Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunners fell by a single point on the road at Chinle on Friday night, losing 58-57 in the waning seconds. The Lady Birds started slowly getting outscored by seven points in the first period where they made just two field goals along with four free throws. In the second period Holbrook fought back behind a barrage of three-point shots. Megan Cummings nailed a trio, Talynn Spencer and Desirae Bain each added one and Madison Chappell scored five points in the paint moving Holbrook in front 29-28 at the intermission. Matehya Aberle scored six points in the third and Cummings added her fourth three of the game, but Chinle went back in front by three with eight minutes to play. In the fourth, the Wildcats extended their lead to as many as seven and led by five points with under a minute remaining. Holbrook then quickly rattled off six points behind three-point shots from Cummings and Bain, taking a 57-56 lead with under 30 seconds left. Holbrook turned away the Wildcats defensively and had an opportunity to move out in front but a couple of late game turnovers enabled Chinle to get back to the free throw line where Stacey Begay drained a pair of free throws with three seconds left on the clock to win the game. “We had just played them 12 days earlier in the first game of the year for both teams. This time around both of us played much better. We started slow in each period but seemed to bounce back by the end of each quarter, which bodes well for the future. In the second, Megan stepped up and hit those three-point shots and getting one from Talynn and Desirae sparked us to a one-point lead. Megan’s big three and Desirae’s steal and three-point shot to put us ahead were huge. Without those we wouldn’t have had a chance to get the win. “Unfortunately we just didn’t take good enough care of the ball in the final minute to close out the win. Chinle also made some mistakes, but in the end they got the win. It was good to see the effort the girls put in. We played hard enough to win, we just have to clean up our mistakes at end of games, and hopefully start quarters a little better in the future,” said Roadrunner Coach Greg Perkins. Cummings led the team in scoring with 15 points; Aberle added 13; Chappell, 10; Bain, 7; Mika Joe, 4; Tyleashia Yazzie 3; Spencer, 3; and Shilaine Gorman helped with 2. Holbrook finished with eight three-point field goals and went 11 for 17 at the charity line. Chinle was led by Stacey Begay with 17 points. Gracie Claw added 12. The Wildcats made five three-point field goals and converted 11 of 11 free throws. With Holbrook’s first loss of the season they drop to 2-1 on the campaign. The Lady Roadrunners hosted Ganado on Tuesday night at Munoz Gym and Holbrook will welcome in Fountain Hills on Friday.
