Holbrook’s volleyball team heads into the final stretch of its season needing wins to have a chance at postseason play. With four games left, the Lady Roadrunners rank 31st in the 3A rankings. They need to climb at least into the top 24 to qualify for state tournament play.
Last week’s regular season action didn’t help that cause. Holbrook dropped a pair of road games. Playing in Round Valley on Monday evening, the team won the first game but dropped the next three for the 1-3 loss to the Elks. Wednesday’s trip to Window Rock for a region contest with the Scouts ended in three games, with Holbrook falling 13-25, 20-25 and 21-25.
The team participated in the Joseph City tournament over the weekend, going 1-3 in pool matches on Friday. They started well enough with a 2-0 win over Dishchiibikoh, then lost to Kingman Academy 0-2, Monument Valley Utah 1-2 and Williams 1-2.
Holbrook bounced back on Saturday in bracket play. They defeated Monument Valley UT 2-0, then beat Williams 2-0. They lost in the semifinal round to Willcox 1-2, then lost the third- and fourth-place match to Kingman Academy 0-2, placing fourth overall in the tournament.
Holbrook will play just once during fall break this week when they travel to take on Alchesay on Thursday. They will have three regular-season matches left after the break, beginning with a home-court matchup against Winslow on Oct. 20.
The team is 4-10 in regular-season contests and 7-15 overall thus far this season.
