The Holbrook Lady Roadrunners picked up a much needed 61-56 sectional and divisional victory Tuesday night over 10th ranked Tuba City. Holbrook came into the contest ranked 18th and needed the win to maintain a playoff position. Both teams scored well in the first eight minutes, with the Lady Warriors holding an 18-15 edge after one. Dakota Dick hit a pair of threes and Laurie Brown canned two field goals to pace the Birds. In the second Holbrook caught and passed the visitors, outscoring them 19-13. Dick added another trey, and was joined by Sevanah Bitahy and Tyler Pacheco with success from distance. Aiyana Gary gave Holbrook a spark coming off the bench with eight big second period points. The Roadrunners pushed the lead to five points with eight minutes to play. Brown connected on two treys and Dishie Kinlicheenie added another big three-point shot in the frame. The final eight minutes were a wash with each team scoring 15 points. Holbrook went four for six at the charity line to close the game out, including a pair by Kinlicheenie with seven seconds left to ice the win. Brown led Holbrook with 11 points. Dick added 9; Gary, 8; Kinlicheenie and Ariyana Pratt, 7 each; Pacheco, 6; Twyla Clark, 5; Quanyyah Lester and Bitahy, 3 each; and Alishea Kee, 2. The Birds made 13 field goals and hit nine treys, and went eight for 11 at the charity stripe. Tuba City made three shots from distance and went five for 10 at the line. “We definitely needed the win. This is a big week for us and now we need two more victories,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “We have to take better care of the basketball. Way too many basically unforced turnovers made this game harder than it should have been. “Aiyana really gave us a spark off the bench and it was good to see Dishie find a trace of her old self in the second half. Also, Laurie shot the ball with confidence and it showed.” With the win the Roadrunners evened their season mark at 11-11. They are now 5-6 in power point contests and will remain inside the top 20 in the standings. They are slated to host Blue Ridge tonight (Jan. 22) in a girls’ only contest. All three teams, freshman, junior varsity and varsity, will play at Munoz Gym beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the freshman game. On Saturday, Jan. 23, the Roadrunners head to Winslow for what should be an exciting rematch with the Lady Bulldogs. All six games will be played in Petranovich Gym, with the freshman girls starting the day off at noon.
