Holbrook was a little ragged around the edges in the first period on Friday night on the offensive end, but their defense was spot on holding visiting Blue Ridge without a point in the first eight minutes of their 66-30 home court win. Elena Smith and Tyler Pacheco combined for 10 of the Lady Birds 18 points and Dakota Dick, Madison Chappell, Rayanna Wauneka and Matehya Aberle each had one field goal in the frame. “We had some problems taking care of the ball early finishing the first period with nine turnovers. But defensively the girls made up for it playing extremely well,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. In the second, Blue Ridge broke through scoring 16 points, but Holbrook built on their lead with a 20-point effort. Smith added two treys to her total. Dick and Pacheco also each hit one from distance and Tristen Ambrose scored twice in the paint helping Holbrook to a 38-16 intermission lead. Holbrook’s defense held the Jackets to single digits in both the third and fourth periods in the win. Rayanna Wauneka hit a pair of three-point shots in the third, and Chappell and Pacheco each scored twice in the paint in the half leading a balanced offensive attack for Holbrook that improved to 8-2 overall with the win. “We certainly need to take better care of the ball, most of those mistakes were just being careless with the ball. But defensively we played well. I was a little concerned about this game, but the girls came out really strong on defense early in the game and got the job done. A good overall team win for us. Monument will be a huge test for us on Wednesday. They are playing very well in the north region where all the teams are quality opponents,” said Perkins. Smith led all scorers with 17 points. Pacheco added 13; Dick, 9; Wauneka, 8; Aberle, 7; Ambrose, 6; and Chappell also netted 6. Holbrook made three of seven free throws, and connected on seven three-point shots. Blue Ridge was led by Kiera Smith and Detinay Kasey with each netting 10. The Jackets went four for eight at the line and made two three-point shots in the loss. Holbrook will play at Monument Valley today (Wednesday, Dec. 20), they will be off until Dec. 28 when they play in what should be a highly competitive Chandler Prep Tournament. Joining Holbrook in that tourney will be Valley Christian, Chinle, Monument Valley and Ganado, among others in the top level bracket. Holbrook is 5-0 in power point contests. The initial rankings were to be released on Monday morning.
