The Lady Roadrunners were able to overcome some missing players to finish last week with back-to-back wins after falling to Snowflake earlier in the week. Hosting the Lobos on Tuesday night, Holbrook trailed by two points after the first quarter and by nine at the half. They eventually lost the east region game 45-31. “The girls played hard. We are down a few players at the moment but hopefully by the time the state tournament comes around we can be back to nearly full strength. Until then we need to have our younger role players step up. Snowflake is playing very well at the moment, and we just didn’t have enough pieced to match their performance,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. Noheah Aberle led Holbrook in scoring, with 7 points. Shan Footracer and Abigayle Nez each added 5; Raelle Yazzie, 4; Sara Billy, 3; Sam Billie, 2; Deya Guerrero, 2; Nikol Gombos, 2; and Shondiin Ben had one. Holbrook played in Blue Ridge the following night and those young role players started to find their footing. Holbrook trailed by five at the end of the first but rallied to lead by six at the half. Their lead was four going into the final quarter, but in the fourth, the Birds held Blue Ridge to just two field goals en route to a 44-36 hard earned win. Coach Perkins stated, “It was a struggle, but we held on and kept playing hard to get the win.” Aberle led the team in scoring, with 13 points. Nez added 11; Gombos, 7; Footracer, 6; Sam Billie, 4; Deya Guerrero, 2; and Billy added one. Hosting a tall Payson club on Friday night, the Roadrunners turned a two-point first period lead into a seven-point halftime edge. Payson closed the game to two points late in the third, but in the fourth Holbrook ramped up their defense outscoring the visitors by seven to secure the 52-41 win. Footracer played well in the paint, leading Holbrook with 16 points. Billie had a big fourth quarter with eight points and totaled 10 for the game. Noheah Aberle had 8; Yazzie, 6; Deya Guerrero, 6; and Shondiin Ben had two. “Sam played through a bad ankle and really gave us a strong effort and an emotional boost in this game. She is one of our senior leaders and showed it tonight. Also, Shan’s effort in the paint against those taller players was key for us as well. Our role players Raelle, Deya and Sara gave us strong performances as well. Being limited with our roster has given these younger players more playing time and they are beginning to step up. We will need them going forward for sure,” said Perkins. Holbrook enters this week ranked sixth in power points. Their overall record stands at 17-4 and they are 9-2 in regular season contests. After hosting Show Low on Monday, they will travel to Window Rock on Wednesday. On Friday they welcome Payson for Senior night. Next week will see the team hit the road for three games. They play at Winslow on Tuesday, at Show Low on Thursday, and will wrap up the regular season in Snowflake next Friday.
