The Lady Roadrunners went 2-1 last week, bracketing home court wins over Show Low and Blue Ridge around a road loss at Window Rock. Hosting Show Low on Monday night Holbrook started quickly, making the first seven points of the game but by the half they trailed the Cougars, 22-14. Show Low built as much as a 10-point lead in the third quarter before Holbrook cut the lead to four heading into the fourth. In the final frame the Roadrunners outscored Show Low by six points to escape with a 43-41 win. Terry Nez led the Birds in scoring with 12. Talynn Spencer added 11; Shan Footracer, 7; Abigayle Nez, 6; Sam Billie, 4; and Raelle Yazzie hit one big three-point shot. Playing in Window Rock on Wednesday, Holbrook played a solid first period and through the first six minutes of the second period, they were still tied at 19-19. From that point on the rest of the game belonged to the scouts who defeated Holbrook 62-48. Footracer led Holbrook in scoring with 12. Sam Billie added 10; Abigayle Nez, 9; Terry Nez, 8; Nikol Gombos, 3; Sara Billy, 3; Leiona Smith, 2; and Raelle Yazzie had 1 point. Hosting Blue Ridge on Senior night the Lady Roadrunners led by 12 at the half then despite scoring just three points in the fourth quarter they won the game 44-25. Terry Nez led the team with 14; Footracer added 13; Sam Billie, 4; Billy, 4; Raelle Yazzie, 2; Abigayle Nez, 2; Gombos, 2; and Kim Billie scored one. The Lady Roadrunners enter the final week of the regular season with an overall record of 19-5 and they are 11-3 in regular season games and were ranked sixth prior to Friday’s win. If they can remain inside the top eight in the rankings, which will be tough, playing their three remaining games without a full roster, they would be able to get a much needed first round bye in the state tournament. If they don’t stay inside the top eight, they will most likely host a first round game on Tuesday night at Munoz Gym. Holbrook plays at Winslow on Tuesday, at Show Low on Thursday then closes out the regular season in Snowflake on Friday night. The 3A brackets will be released on Saturday morning.
