The Lady Roadrunners bounced back from Saturday’s loss to Valley with a solid 57-34 home court win over Show Low on Tuesday night. Desirae Bain sparked the Lady Birds in the first stanza draining three treys, and Alyssa Yazzie added another. Matehya Aberle also scored on two field goals in the paint giving Holbrook a 16-11 first period edge. In the second, Bain added five more to her total and Madison Chappell found the range from deep helping Holbrook post a 28-21 halftime lead. After an injury time out to a Holbrook player, resulted in a lengthy delay, the two teams returned to the court for the second half. Holbrook played well defensively in the third, limiting the Cougars to just four points while pushing their lead to 15. The fourth period put the game out of reach. Aberle went to work inside and Terry Nez chipped in with a trey giving Holbrook their 17th win of the season. “The girls played well tonight. We had to make some quick adjustments on defense to try and contain their point guard and I thought the girls did a decent job of adapting to what we were trying to do. It was great to see Desirae rediscover her shooting touch. Also, Madi and Matehya continue to be a force on both the outside and in the paint. Alyssa Yazzie performed well in her first start of the year and Mika gave us a couple of big shots as well. Now we have to focus on Monument Valley who has been playing very well. Also, our injured player is going to be ok which is a huge relief,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. Bain and Aberle had a good inside out combination working to the tune of 16 points for each player to lead the team in scoring. Chappell added 10; Yazzie, 5; Mika Joe, 5; Nez, 3; and Shan Footracer helped with 2 points. Holbrook went six for seven at the charity stripe and knocked down a season high nine three-point shots. Show Low was led by their outstanding point guard Cody Thomas who had 10 and Harlie Hitchcock added 8. The Cougars made no three-point shots and went two for five at the line. With the win, Holbrook improved to 17-6 on the season and they advanced to 8-5 in regular season games. The team was ranked 14th prior to Tuesday’s win.
