The Lady Roadrunners had their five-game win streak snapped at Valley Sanders on Saturday afternoon. Holbrook gave away a 12-point lead in the final period before falling 53-50 to the Lady Pirates. Holbrook started well, netting 18 in the first quarter with Matehya Aberle cleaning up the offensive boards and putting them back in for 10 points. In the second, Holbrook scored 19 behind another eight from Aberle and eight from Abigayle Nez. Desirae Bain also hit her second trey of the game in the second. After a long halftime delay due to an injury, the teams returned to the court, but Holbrook didn’t return to their winning ways. Valley held the Roadrunners to just five points in the third getting back into the game. Holbrook still led by three but the momentum had turned. In the fourth Holbrook didn’t score a two-point field goal but did hit three treys, although it wasn’t enough to offset a strong performance from Valley’s R. Nez who finished with 23 total points, with 14 of those coming in the final eight minutes. Holbrook was led by Aberle’s 19 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Nez added 10; Madison Chappell, 7; Alyssa Yazzie, 6; Bain, 6; and Mika Joe finished with 3. Holbrook made seven three-point field goals and went six for 10 at the free throw line. Valley made three treys and went eight for 15 at the line. “This was a disappointing loss for sure. We knew exactly how they were going to play and we didn’t handle it very well. Give Valley credit, they did what they needed to get the win. We need to get mentally tougher down the stretch as we get ready to go into the state tournament. We have to play harder and shoot the ball with more confidence without question,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. With the loss Holbrook dropped to 7-5 in regular season games and moved to 16-6 overall on the season. After hosting Show Low on Tuesday night, the Lady Roadrunners will host Monument Valley on Friday night in a girls-only game. On Saturday the team travels to Fountain Hills for a match up with the Falcons. Next Tuesday Holbrook plays at Winslow.
