Holbrook was ranked seventh in the 3A softball rankings on Monday morning, but with one game left to be played on Monday afternoon, their state tournament seeding had yet to be determined. If they remained inside the top eight in the final rankings they will play in the first round of the state tournament when it gets underway on Saturday. If they were to have fallen to ninth or lower in the rankings they would be hosting a play-in game on Wednesday afternoon against a lower seeded team.
Holbrook entered Monday’s regular season finale on the heels of a three game skid. This past week they lost at Snowflake on Tuesday, 9-7, then were shut out by visiting Winslow on Friday, 15-0.
Tuesday’s game in Snowflake started well enough with Holbrook on top 5-0 after two innings. The Lobos cut into the lead with three in the home half of the third. Holbrook moved back out in front 7-3 after scoring two more in the fourth. Unfortunately for Roadrunner fans, that was all they would get. Snowflake rallied in the fifth to get the lead before going on to win by two runs.
Holbrook finished with 10 hits. Kallee Reidhead went 2 for 3, with a triple; Makenzi Thompson, 2 for 4; Canela Queiruga, 2 for 3; Jovon Boling, 2 for 4; Carla Plumb, 1 for 3; and Sydney Plumb was 1 for 3.
Destany Begay pitched all seven innings giving up nine runs on 15 hits with three strikeouts.
On Friday, Holbrook hosted Winslow in terrible weather conditions. The game, which started at the high school, had to eventually be moved to the city fields for completion.
Winslow wasn’t bothered much by the weather or the move as they scored six runs in the first, then pulled away from that point with three in the second, four in the third, and the final two in the fourth.
Holbrook really struggled against Winslow’s Justine Butterfield who held the Roadrunners to just four hits with seven players striking out. Reidhead, Carla Plumb, Thompson and Kendra Monroe each had singles in the loss.
Carla Plumb pitched three innings giving up six runs on two hits with six strikeouts and walked four. Begay worked two innings allowing nine runs on 10 hits with one walk.
Pending the outcome of Monday’s action, both in Holbrook and around the state the softball team won’t know their week’s plans until Tuesday morning when the final 3A rankings are set.
