The Lady Roadrunners picked up their ninth East region win and 22nd season win overall with a workman-like 56-35 victory at Blue Ridge on Monday night. Holbrook started a little quick with Madison Chappell scoring eight first period points giving the Lady Birds a 15-4 lead at the end of the first period. In the second, Abigayle Nez broke out of a short scoring lump scoring all nine of her game points in the second frame as Holbrook built a 29-15 halftime lead. Matehya Aberle and Holbrook’s defense both took over in the third. The Roadrunner post player scored 10 points, which was four more than Holbrook’s defense allowed the Yellowjackets with the Roadrunners taking a 48-21 lead into the final frame. Blue Ridge outscored Holbrook in the final eight minutes but the final outcome was never in danger as Holbrook won the game 56-35. Aberle led the team in scoring with 16 points. Madison Chappell added her tenth double-double of the season with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Abigayle Nez finished with 9; Terry Nez, 6; Mika Joe, 5; Talynn Spencer, 5; and Desirae Bain ended with 3. Holbrook made four three-point field goals and went eight for 14 at the line. Blue Ridge was led by Preslie Cosay with 7. The Jackets made three treys and missed their only free throw attempt of the game. “We were emotionally flat in this game. I think maybe Friday’s game with Snowflake was still lingering and it took us some time to get our legs back. We didn’t play great defense in the first half but improved on that in the third period. The girls found Matehya in transition in the second half and we were able to secure the win. We know we will have to play better in order to advance very deep in the upcoming state tournament,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. Holbrook is 22-6 overall and will conclude the regular season vs Show Low on Thursday in Heber at Mogollon High School. Following that the Roadrunners will find out who they will host in the first round of the 3A State Playoffs, which will begin for Holbrook on Tuesday night at Munoz Gym.
