After dropping a pair of regular season east region contests to Winslow and Payson to begin the month of April, Holbrook’s softball team bounced back by sweeping Blue Ridge in double header action on Monday afternoon.
Holbrook won the first game 13-6, utilizing a big first inning to gain the upper hand. The ladies scored seven runs in the bottom of the first but gave up six to the Jackets in the first two. That 7-6 lead held until the bottom of the fourth when Holbrook scored four more runs taking control of the game. The Birds added one more in each the fifth and sixth to secure the 13-6 win.
Destany Begay led the charge at the plate going 2 for 4, with a triple; Canela Queiruga was 2 for 4; Madison Chappell, 2 for 4; Kallee Reidhead, 1 for 3; Carla Plumb, 1 for 3; Hailey Guttery, 1 for 3; and Sydney Plumb, 1 for 2.
Begay worked all seven innings in the circle giving up six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Holbrook trailed 3-1 in the second game when their turn to bat came in the bottom of the fourth. That’s where the game turned with the Roadrunners scoring eight runs in the inning to lead 9-3. They went on to take the second game 11-4 improving their regular season mark to 11-3, which had them ranked fifth heading into Friday’s game at second ranked Show Low.
On Tuesday Holbrook played at Snowflake. Following that contest the team will have just two regular season games left.
The east region is well represented in the state rankings with just a couple of weeks left in the regular season with region teams holding four of the top 10, and five of the top 11 positions. Show Low is No. 2, Holbrook No. 5, Payson No. 6, Winslow No. 7 and Snowflake No. 11.
