In their three games last week, which covered the spectrum of competition, the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners went 1-2. Hosting fifth ranked Window Rock last Wednesday night the Roadrunners played extremely well through the first 12 minutes of the game, building a 28-10 lead midway through the second period. As well as they played early, though, was about as poor as they played down the stretch. They still held a slim lead with three minutes left in the fourth, but a rough stretch of consecutive turnovers handed the Lady Scouts a lead they wouldn’t relinquish as they claimed a 57-51 win over Holbrook. Quanyyah Lester led Holbrook with 15 points. Ariyana Pratt added 10; Laurie Brown, 6; Sevanah Bitahy, 5; Tyler Pacheco, 4; Twyla Clark, Dishie Kinlicheenie and Alishea Kee, 3 each; and Aiyana Gary, 2. The Roadrunners made seven three-point shots, but went just six for 10 at the line. Last Friday’s game at Many Farms was much easier for the Birds, as they headed for home with a comfortable 60-38 win despite not really shooting the ball all that well. Brown shot well in the first eight minutes, netting 10 of her 14 points and pacing Holbrook to a 22-12 first period lead. In the second the Roadrunners struggled from the field, but still led by nine at the half. Holbrook’s defense picked up in the second half and Lester drained 12 of her 17 points in the third period alone, helping to give the team a sizeable lead. Along with Lester’s 17, Brown scored 14; Pratt, 8; Pacheco, Kee and Gary, 4 each; Dakota Dick and Shoshawna Jack, 3 each; and Bitahy, 2. Highly touted Page came to Holbrook on Saturday and through the first two minutes of the game things looked good. The Roadrunners made their first three shots and trailed just by six points. From that point on they made just three of their remaining 26 shots and limped away with their worst defeat in eight years, falling 59-18. Holbrook shot just 11 percent for the game against Page’s aggressive defense. Six different girls scored for Holbrook, but each made just one field goal. The cold shooting continued from the charity stripe, where the team went only six for 16. “Credit Page’s defense. They were outstanding and we didn’t step up to their aggressive play. We were able to get several looks with driving layups, just couldn’t get them to go in. I think we were more concerned with the contact than we were focused on making shots. Page is very solid and will have a great chance to repeat as state champs,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “Now we have to focus on our remaining two games. We are still in position for the section tournament, as well as the state tournament. This is the time of year you want to be peaking and this game was certainly a setback, but I’m confident the girls will overcome this and be ready to go on Wednesday and Friday of this week.” The Roadrunners are now 14-13 on the season. They enter tonight’s (Feb. 3) game at Chinle ranked fifth in section standings and will close out the regular season at home on Friday, Feb. 5, when they welcome in Monument Valley. Depending on what happens around the section, it appears Holbrook will need to win at least one of these two remaining games to make the section tournament, which will be held on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of next week in Chinle.
