Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunner soccer team continues to show improvement on the season. Despite entering this week’s action with a regular season mark of 0-6, the team has played several matches very close, including their past two.

Playing in Snowflake on Tuesday of last week the Roadrunners came up short in a 2-0 final score. Goalkeeper Holly Hill has drawn accolades from opposing coaches for her play in the goal, and the entire team is being credited by Holbrook coaches for improved play.

“We’ve had some tough losses this season, but the ladies have shown they can compete with any team. Close losses to Blue Ridge, and Payson, among others, have given the girls some confidence,” noted Assistant Coach Victor Paz.

Last Saturday afternoon the Roadrunners hosted St. Johns, a team they had previously lost to on the road by a final of 8-0. They played much better on their home turf.

Hill and senior Elena Smith carried Holbrook’s defense to a 1-0 deficit late in the match. With two minutes left in the match, Holbrook’s Jaden Pack nailed a shot from over 20 yards out to tie the game at 1-1 against a team that had dominated them earlier in the year.

St. Johns, which came into the match ranked fourth in power rankings, managed to score just before time expired to win 2-1.

“Along with Holly and Elena, our whole team played extremely well. Our bench players did their part when they went, as well.” added Coach Paz.

After playing at Round Valley on Monday, Holbrook will travel to Blue Ridge for a match on Thursday, Sept. 28. This weekend they will compete in the Thunder in the Dome tournament in Round Valley. The Roadrunners will face Northland Prep on Friday, then will match up with Round Valley and Page on Saturday.
