The Lady Lobos may have kept their post-season hopes alive last week with a split in their two games played. Playing in Payson on Jan. 29, Snowflake was able to withstand a 24-point performance from Payson’s Raegan Ashby and head for home with a 47-44 win after holding off a fourth quarter charge from the Longhorns.

Snowflake trailed by two after one, but surpassed the Longhorns in the second taking a 28-23 halftime lead. They pushed that margin to double digits in the third, holding Payson to just six points. Leading by 11 with eight to play, the Lobos were outscored by eight points in the fourth but held on for the three-point win.

Friday night’s home game with visiting Holbrook didn’t go quite as well. Holbrook came to town with solid defense and took a 21-5 first period lead. Had it not been for the Lobos scoring on Holbrook’s bench in the second period, their half time deficit may have been larger than the 37-16 uphill climb they already faced. Snowflake did outscore Holbrook over the second half by one point but the final outcome was a 60-38 Holbrook win.

The Lobos made two of three free throw attempts and failed to make any three-point field goals.

With the split, Snowflake entered the final week of the regular season with an overall record of 9-15, and they are 4-12 in regular season contests leaving them ranked 22nd prior to the Holbrook loss. After they played at Show Low on Tuesday, they will play in Winslow on Friday night to close out the regular season.

The East Region does not have a regional tournament this year, so the Lobos will have to remain inside the top 24 in the final standings if they want to make the state tournament which begins on Tuesday of next week.
