By Greg Perkins Second-seeded Snowflake held off a determined Show Low basketball squad in the 3A state quarterfinals on Friday night, and had a come from behind 45-37 win to advance to the state semi-final round. Snowflake has been the top team in the east region all year and this was the third time they defeated the Cougars, although each match-up got progressively tougher. Winslow upset Holbrook in the other quarterfinal match up meaning the Lobos as the higher seed will host Winslow on Wednesday night for the right to see which team will more than likely get to face Page in the state championship game on Saturday at Eastmark High School. The top-seeded and unbeaten Sand Devils throttled Yuma Catholic in their quarterfinal round. Page will have to take care of a tougher Thatcher team first in the semi-final, but with a veteran team determined to represent the entire north region, they appear to be on a path to the title game. Snowflake defeated Winslow in both their regular-season meetings, although the Lady Bulldogs are playing at a very high level in the past two weeks. Their upset of Holbrook proved how hard it is to beat a good team three times. Wednesday’s match-up in Snowflake could be a tough battle. If Snowflake and Page meet in the title game it will be a rematch of an earlier season meeting in which Page held the Lobos to five second-half points en route to a 19-point win. If Snowflake can remain healthy and get past Winslow, they may have a better chance against the ultra talented and driven Page team.
