Snowflake welcomed 14 teams to this year’s “Be Like Nat” tournament. Teams were situated into four different pools for pool play and then earned their way into either the championship bracket or the consolation bracket depending on pool play results.

The Lobos were in a pool with Safford, St, Johns and Winslow. They opened pool play Friday morning with a 2-0 win over Winslow. Later that morning they took care of St. Johns by the same 2-0 score. Their final pool play match was a 2-1 win over Safford on Friday afternoon.

The Lobos advanced to the championship or Gold Bracket where they met up with Tuba City early Saturday morning. Snowflake cruised past the Lady Warriors in two straight games. That win set them up with a match vs Mesquite. Mesquite is a tough team and showed their mettle handing the Lobos their first tournament loss in two straight games.

That loss meant the Lobos had to work their way through the loser side of the bracket, which is what they did with wins over Page and Winslow both by 2-0 scores. The Winslow win put them back into the championship match where they once again faced Mesquite. The Wildcats proved their first win wasn’t a fluke as they took care of the Lobos in the title game again by a score of 2-0. Snowflake finished as the runner-up of the Gold Bracket.

This week Snowflake returns to regular season action with a trip to Winslow on Tuesday, followed by a home match with Payson on Wednesday. Next Tuesday they will travel to Show Low, then welcome in Holbrook on the 27th.

Snowflake is 5-1 in regular season action. The initial 3A power ranking will be released on Sept. 26 and the Lobos should find themselves with at least a top-five ranking if they keep up their winning ways.
