By Greg Perkins Snowflake’s Lady Lobos split their final two games of the regular season and now find themselves in a holding mode for the state tournament. A 57-53 loss at Window Rock last Tuesday, followed by a 48-15 win over Many Farms on Friday left the Lobos sitting at 22nd in the power rankings. They did not qualify for the section tournament, finishing seventh, and now must wait to see what happens around the state in the seven section tournaments in Division III which will be played out during this week. Sitting just two positions out of the top 24 leaves them in a precarious spot. If teams from other sections outside the top 24 win their section tournament or compile enough power points, they could potentially knock the Lobos from the state tournament. The good news is that their section (Section 1) has six powerful teams ranked inside the top 16, which could actually move the Lobos up in the rankings depending on which teams advance. Playing in Window Rock on Tuesday, Snowflake trailed by just one at the half, but a poor third period put the squad down by double digits heading to the fourth. The Lobos netted 21 points in the fourth, but couldn’t get any closer than the final four-point deficit. Tori Flake led the way with 16 points, followed by Nikita Olms with 13; Audrey Livingston, 9; Emily Ballard, 7; Breklee Tanner, 3; Mickelle Stradling and Madison Butler, 2 each; and Melissa Eich, 1. Hosting Many Farms on Senior Night, the Lobos dominated on defense, holding the visitors to just six first half points en route to a 48-15 win. Tori Flake scored 16 points; Livingston and Elle Flake, 8 each; Butler, 6; Olms, 4; and Ballard, Tanner and Eich, 2 each. If the Lobos maintain their position in the top 24, they will open state tournament play on the road at the site of the higher seed on Tuesday, Feb. 16. If they get bumped from the tourney, they will have wrapped up their season with an overall record of 16-12 and 10-8 in power point contests.
