The Lady Lobos had a rough beginning to the new year, suffering losses in both games after the Christmas break.

Hosting Payson on Thursday, Snowflake held a double-digit lead in the fourth period, but let it slip away in the final minutes, losing a close decision 52-50 to the Lady Longhorns.

“We had a good lead late, but made some mistakes toward the end of the game which really hurt us,” said Coach Don Godfrey.

After trailing by six to start the second period, Snowflake outscored Payson by 15 points over the next two quarters. In the fourth the Lady Lobos gave all that back as they were outscored by 11 points. Tandis Yellowhair led the team in scoring with 13, Lisha Titus added 10, Natalie Elkins, 9, and Devrie Woodside, 8. Snowflake went 14 for 20 at the free throw line, had 13 steals and committed 18 turnovers.

Facing a tough Lady Bulldog team with just two losses on the season in Winslow is a tough task for any team, and the Lady Lobos were just overmatched from the beginning. Despite breaking Winslow’s vaunted full court pressure, Snowflake missed too many scoring opportunities in the paint and trailed by 14 points after eight minutes. Winslow went on to outscore the Lady Lobos in each of the next three quarters to win the game 64-35.

Yellowhair and Elkins led the team in scoring with 10 points each. Woodside added 10 and Titus netted 4. Snowflake made 12 of 22 free throws and had nine steals, but turned the ball over to Winslow 23 times.
