The Lady Lobos fell to Holbrook for the third time this season in the semifinal round of the Division IV sectional tournament last Tuesday evening.
The Lady Roadrunners opened up a five-point lead in the first quarter, then gradually outscored Snowflake in each subsequent period. Holbrook made 17 free throws in the final quarter to pull away for the 71-51 win in a foul marred game. The two teams combined to shoot 65 free throws as a result of 57 total fouls. The Roadrunners outscored the Lobos 43-29 in the second half to secure the win.
Melissa Eich finished with 12 points, as did Kadi Johnson, who also grabbed a dozen boards. Marisa Godfrey added 10, and Tycee Coplan hit for 7 with four steals. Elle Flake netted 4 points; and Tori Flake, Audrey Livingston and Macie Rawlins, two each. The Lobos made 19 of 32 free throws, had 25 turnovers and compiled 15 steals.
Despite the loss Snowflake landed in a fairly nice position in the state tournament bracket. Playing as the 13th overall seed the Lobos will host No. 20 American Leadership Academy at 6 o’clock tonight (Feb. 18). American Leadership has compiled a nice 13-5 record, but has not played a very tough schedule. The Lobos should easily advance to the second round, where they would face No. 4 Safford on Saturday, Feb. 20, at a neutral site. The Lady Bulldogs received a first round bye. Snowflake lost to Safford by just six points at the end of the season. The Lobos head into the state tournament with an overall record of 16-13.
