Snowflake’s Lady Lobos put together a very solid volleyball season, but their state title hopes were dashed by Flagstaff in the quarterfinal round of the Division III State Tournament last Friday night in Prescott Valley.
The Lobos entered the bracket seeded sixth overall and took down 11th ranked Youngker 3-2 in the opening round on Friday afternoon to advance to the second round. Snowflake took the first game 25-21, then dropped the second, 25-16. Game three went the Lobos’ way, as they won it 25-22, but in game four they faltered, losing 25-14 to send their match to a fifth and decisive game to 15. Snowflake closed the door, dominating game five 15-5.
That win sent them to a matchup with the very talented third seeded Lady Eagles of Flagstaff. The first game was exciting and close throughout with the teams battling to a 31-29 final score. Unfortunately, the Lobos battled tough but came up just two points short in the end. Game two went the way of the Eagles, 25-20. Snowflake fought tough, but fell again in game three, losing it 25-23 to close the book on the 2014 season with an overall non-tournament record of 15-5.
Of those five losses, two were to eventual state champion Monument Valley and two were to Flagstaff. Monument Valley defeated Cactus in the state title game, 25-20, 26-24, 23-25 and 25-14.
