By Greg Perkins The Lady Lobos ran into a veteran ball club on Saturday afternoon and by the time they had left Page the undefeated Lady Sand Devils with their seven talented and experienced seniors on the roster put an abrupt end to Snowflake’s unbeaten streak. It remains to be seen if the loss will drop Snowflake out of the top spot in the 3A power rankings that were released on Thursday, but the Sand Devils who have played in the past four consecutive state championship games proved to be the best team on the court despite being ranked fifth in the initial rankings. Snowflake’s week started on Tuesday when they got a huge game from Emily Davis who helped them defeat Winslow for the first time in five years by a final of 58-41. Winslow held a double-digit lead in the first half but the Lobos fought their way back in the fourth quarter where they turned a two point lead into a 17 point win by holding the Bulldogs to just three points in the final eight minutes of action. Davis scored 23 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead her team in both categories. Trystan Hancock added 19; Macee Lesueur, 11; Kamri Ballard, 3; Hannah Nichols, 1; and Austin Stratton helped with 1. Prior to the loss in Page, Snowflake picked up their ninth consecutive win of the season with a 44-35 win over visiting Show Low on Thursday. Snowflake’s leading scorer on the season, Davis went down early in the contest with an ankle injury and sat out the rest of the game. That was all the opening the Cougars needed as they battled tough and trailed by just one point midway through the fourth period. In the waning stages of the final quarter, Snowflake took advantage of four straight Cougar turnovers and fought hard on the glass to eventually pull away and win their sixth consecutive east region contest. Davis returned to the court on Saturday in Page, going up against one of those experienced Page players, post Torrance Begay, who has two state titles to her credit already, Davis and her team fought hard through the first half, but Page’s vaunted defense took over in the second half. The Sand Devils held Snowflake to just four points in the first quarter, and five total points in the second half of the 40-21 Page win. After playing in Holbrook against the second ranked Roadrunners on Tuesday, Snowflake will play against a quickly improving Blue Ridge team in Lakeside on Friday. Next Tuesday they host Payson. Snowflake enters this week’s action with an overall mark of 9-1.
