Winslow’s softball team won just one of three games played last week leaving them ranked eighth in the 3A power rankings at the beginning of this week. With only three weeks left in the regular season, wins become more and more important as the Bulldogs try to secure as high of seed as possible in the upcoming state tournament.
Playing at Coconino on Monday of last week, the Bulldogs fell 6-5 to the Panthers. Coconino led 2-0 early but Winslow came back taking a 3-2 lead after three innings. In the fourth the Panthers pulled ahead by two, then they added their final run in the top of the fifth. Winslow trailed by two going into the seventh but had their late inning rally cut short after scoring one run.
Winslow finished with only three hits in the game but two of them came off the bat of Jordyn Johnson who went 2 for 3, with a home run and a double. Chloe Wilcox went 1 for 3, with a double.
Justine Butterfield took the loss in the circle. She worked all seven innings giving up six runs, only one earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and walked four Panther batters.
Hosting Holbrook on Tuesday, the Bulldogs upended second ranked Holbrook 12-3 behind strong hitting performances from Maycee Cunningham and Brooke Williams, along with a wonderful pitching effort from Johnson who limited Holbrook to just four hits.
Winslow’s final game of the week was another east region tilt at Show Low where they came up short in an 11-4 loss to the Cougars.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in each of the first two innings but that was all they would get the rest of the game. Show Low scored runs in five of the six innings they batted to get the win.
