The Lady Roadrunners are showing their inexperience early in the volleyball season. After losing at Window Rock to open the season last Tuesday, they fell in five games to the Lady Bulldogs in Winslow on Thursday.
Winslow took the first game 25-20, then Holbrook controlled game two, 25-14. The host team won game three 25-17, only to see Holbrook tie the match by winning game four 25-19.
The fifth game was a barnburner. Fifth games are played to just 15 points, but a team has to win by two to end the match. Holbrook and Winslow fought back and forth extending the decisive game until the Bulldogs eventually came out on top 21-19 in an epic battle.
Adriana Monroe finished with two aces, 14 kills, three assists and 25 digs for Holbrook. Alishea Kee had an ace, a kill, 22 assists and seven digs. They defeated Caesar Chavez on two occasions, winning the first match 25-13, 23-25 and 15-0, and the second match 18-25, 27-25 and 15-9. The team’s third win was a 25-14 and 26-24 victory over Wickenburg. The Lady Birds fell to Verrado twice, Bradshaw Mountain and Ganado once, and fought to a tie with Page, with each team winning one game in pool play.
“Overall, the girls are playing hard. The young girls got some key experience at this tournament,” noted Coach Leslie Baldonado.
Several players helped the team achieve its first three wins of the season. Adriana Monroe completed the tournament with seven aces, 26 kills, an assist and 73 digs. Kee had three aces, five kills, 39 assists and 37 digs. Carla Plumb added seven kills, an assist and three digs. Hollins added 25 kills, three assists and 16 digs. Holbrook was slated to play at Ganado on Tuesday, then compete in the one-day Coconino Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12, in Flagstaff. On Tuesday, Sept. 15, the Roadrunners will play at home for the first time this season when they host the Lady Panthers from Coconino. Two days later, they will welcome in Blue Ridge.
