The Lady Roadrunners split their two home games played at the close of last week. Thursday’s 14-7 win over Mogollon was dampened by Friday’s 9-8 loss to Globe.
Against the Lady Mustangs, Holbrook grabbed the lead early and led through the first 4½ innings. In the top of the fifth Mogollon battled back, tying the game at 6-6 before going ahead on a misplayed ball in Holbrook’s outfield, which allowed the visitors to take a 7-6 lead.
Needing to rally the Lady Roadrunners did just that in a big way, scoring eight runs in the seventh for the comeback win.
Lauren Silversmith and Izzy Jacques led at the plate with three hits each. Alex Jeffers-Sample and Cynthia Rodriguez each collected two hits, as did freshmen Kendra Monroe and Destany Begay.
Friday’s game with Globe was a back and forth affair in which Holbrook came up one run short in extra innings. The Lady Tigers put Holbrook in a hole early, scoring twice in the first. With the aid of Roadrunner errors that lead grew to 5-0 in the second. Holbrook closed the gap with two runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a perfectly executed slap bunt from Jeffers-Sample, which moved leadoff hitter Brandi Cline into scoring position at third base. Both Cline and Jeffers-Sample later scored on a long single by Rodriguez.
The Roadrunners tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth frame. A single by Cline, and doubles from Jacques and Rodriguez helped tie the score. Holbrook lost opportunities to score in the sixth due to base running mistakes.
The score remained knotted at 5-5 into the top of the ninth, where Globe surged ahead with four runs to lead 9-5. Holbrook rallied in the bottom of the ninth with three runs, but came up just short in the one-run loss.
After hosting Snowflake on Thursday, the Roadrunners will play this afternoon (April 24) at Winslow. They will wrap up the season with games against Alchesay on Tuesday, April 28, and St. Johns on Wednesday, April 29.
Heading into Thursday’s game with the Snowflake Lady Lobos, the Birds had a regular season record of 3-10 and were ranked well outside the top 24 needed to make the post-season.
