Softball 2 Holbrook

The Lady Roadrunners saw their season come to a close in the first round of the Division III state softball playoffs, where they lost 6-1 to Poston Butte last Saturday morning. Despite the loss, the accomplishment of reaching the state tournament was a benchmark for the Holbrook squad.

The Birds won five of their final nine games, garnering them enough power points to climb into the top 32 in the overall standings. Playing as the 31st seed, they traveled to face a Lady Bronco team that was ranked second overall and unbeaten in regular season play. Holbrook’s five-run loss, was Poston Butte’s third closest regular season game of the season.

The Roadrunners achieved quite a bit this season considering their youth with just three seniors on the team, as well as a mid-season coaching change. Megan Newton-Pender took over in early April and led the young team to a state tournament bid. On the season the Roadrunners posted an overall mark of 9-16 and were 7-11 in regular season match ups.

Seniors Alex Jeffers-Sample, Isabelle Jaquez and Cynthia Rodriguez will move on, but the rest of the roster should have a chance to return and improve on this season’s accomplishments.
