The Lady Roadrunners of Holbrook picked up their 17th win of the season with relative ease on Tuesday night. Playing at Ganado against a Lady Hornet team that has struggled throughout the season, the Lady Birds opened up a 20-3 first period cushion, then extended that lead to 35-5 at the half. Col’bi Nez scored eight of her team high 13 in the second period, primarily on steals and layups. Aaren Billie hit a pair of three-point shots in the first and added another in the second. Tamika Baldwin also netted one three in the second period. Holbrook slowed its scoring in the second half, but kept up the intensity on defense, giving up just nine second half points in the 55-14 win. “Obviously they have had a tough season. They are even a younger team than we are and played like it,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “I was proud of the way the girls stayed focused throughout the game and tried to keep playing at a high level despite what the score was. Most of our starting rotation of seven or eight girls only played about a quarter and a half, and our bench players came in and performed well. Hopefully, that extra rest will help us on Friday night at Winslow,” said the coach. Nez led the Lady Roadrunners with 13 points. Billie added 9, Shantina Kinlicheenie, 8, Baldwin, 7, Nyomi Yazzie, Kellin Bakurza and Kaynasa Curley, 4 each, Kenalda Quintero, 3, Samantha Smith, 2, and Charmayne Freddie, 1. Holbrook made six three-point shots, five in the first half, and converted just seven of 14 charity tosses. Ganado was led by Evanna Meyers with 4 points. Lynelle Sandoval added 3, Elisha Dall, Nicole Curley and Tonlyn Butler, 2 each, and Trevain Fowler, 1. The Hornets made one three-point shot and went one for four at the free throw line. Holbrook 20 17 9 9 55 Ganado 3 2 6 3 14 The Lady Birds improved to 17-9 on the season and won their third North Region game. They will conclude the regular season tonight (Feb. 4) at Winslow. “We know going into Winslow will be a tough test. They always play very well at home and they will certainly be ready for us. It will be their Senior Night and they will be trying to get some revenge from our win last week,” said Coach Perkins. “This game also has some huge implications in terms of power points for both teams. It should be fun.” Holbrook will open regional play at Chinle next week, although the final regional bracket has not yet been determined.
