Playing just their second home game prior to the holiday break, the Lady Roadrunners fell behind early Monday night and struggled throughout in a 64-54 loss to Valley Sanders. The unbeaten Lady Pirates jumped on Holbrook in the first quarter, doubling up the Birds 14-7. Holbrook regained some footing in the second, but a last second three-point shot just before the half sent the home team to the locker room trailing 29-20. Though the Roadrunners needed to play well early in the third to get back into the game, just the opposite happened. The Pirates seemingly made everything they threw toward the basket and Holbrook quickly fell behind by double digits. In the fourth the Birds tried to mount a comeback, but the deficit was way too large as they dropped their fourth game of the season against six wins. Rochelle Nez paced Holbrook with 14 points. Cheyenne Lester added 12; Ariyana Pratt, 10; Quanyyah Lester and Tyler Pacheco, 5 each; Dishie Kinlicheenie and Teyah Goldtooth, 3 each; and Laurie Brown, 2. Holbrook made 12 of 19 free throws and hit four three-point shots. Only five Valley players scored in the game, led by Tamera Nez with 20. Terri Mitchell added 18; Latisha Nastacio, 11; Cherele Speen, 9; and Amonie Barney, 6. The Pirates made seven of 12 free throws and hit seven treys. “They jumped on us early, and never really let up. The girls seemed sluggish, and moved in slow motion compared to Valley. We also shot the ball extremely poorly, missing several wide open shots. Valley shot very well and got several points in transition. Overall, they pretty much just whipped us tonight,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “We need to refocus quickly to face another unbeaten team in Ganado on Thursday. The Hornets beat us this summer and have been progressively improving under their new coach. The Hornets will be a tough test for us.” Holbrook drops to 6-4 on the season. After playing in Ganado on Thursday the team will have some time off before traveling to Chandler to play in the Valley Christian Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30.
