Hoping to upset Winslow in the sectional championship game on Friday night the Lady Roadrunners came up short against Shandiin Armao and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs for the third time this season. Winslow came out of the gate on fire, making the majority of their early shots, but Holbrook held tough and trailed just 19-13 after one period. Kaelyn Bitsoi scored eight for Winslow, including two early game treys, and Quanyyah Lester helped Holbrook keep pace with a nine-point effort. The teams played evenly in the second with Rochelle Nez and Teyah Goldtooth hitting a pair of field goals for Holbrook, and Bitsoi adding four more to her total to give Winslow a 31-25 lead at the break. In the third Holbrook trimmed one point off that lead, thanks to Goldtooth’s nine points in the frame. Armao, who was held to only seven points in the first half, started to take things over for Winslow, scoring eight in the third. In the final quarter Holbrook cut the lead to three points, but two misses at the free throw line could have made it a one-point game. From that point Winslow star Armao took complete control, scoring 13 of her game high 28 points in the final period as the Bulldogs won, 63-52. “Give them credit. They stepped up their game and we didn’t match it with our best defensive effort. Despite that we were still in the game late, just missed some big shots down the stretch and you have to convert at the line in the post-season to advance,” said Holbrook Coach Greg Perkins. “Shandiin is tough and I will certainly be glad to see her finally graduate. She has been a big obstacle for us for four years. “Now we have to focus on the state tournament. We still have a first round bye as the No. 7 seed and will need to play well to reach the final four again. I believe these girls can do it, they just have to play together and outwork teams we face.” Goldtooth led Holbrook with 19 points, followed by Quanyyah Lester with 13; Nez, 9; Cheyenne Lester, 5; Summer Olney, 4; and Laurie Brown, 2. Holbrook made only two three-point field goals and went 14 for 20 at the line, although three of those misses were bonus opportunities. Winslow was led by Armao with 28 points. Bitsoi added 17; Ashley Johnson and Adrianna Singer, 6 each; and Lynnae Mitchel, Jayce Sangster and Michael Bia, 2 each. The Bulldogs made three treys, all by Bitsoi, and went 14 for 15 at the line. Winslow is the third seed in the state tournament and will face either Palo Verde Magnet or Window Rock on Saturday, Feb. 21, after receiving a first round bye. Holbrook also received a first round bye as the seventh overall seed, and will face either No. 10 Monument Valley or No. 23 Round Valley on Saturday at a neutral site.
