Holbrook’s 44-34 home court win over Winslow last Tuesday night officially wrapped up the East Region regular season title for the Lady Roadrunners. They are now the top seed for this week’s region tournament and after receiving a first round bye, they will play in the semifinal round on Friday, Feb. 10, at home. Holbrook will host both semifinal contests on Friday, as well as the championship game and the third and fourth place game on Saturday. Last Tuesday’s game was a battle from the beginning. Madison Chappell netted eight early points for Holbrook and Winslow’s Jenna Yazzie led the Lady Bulldog unit with 7, leaving both teams knotted at 18-18 at the half. After what has been a very long shooting drought from behind the arc, Holbrook finally connected from range in this game, finishing with six three-point shots. Two of those came from Ariyana Pratt in the third. Those six points along with four more from Twyla Clark helped Holbrook build a five-point cushion heading to the final eight minutes. Alishea Kee, Tyler Pacheco and Tyanna Smith also found the range from distance in the game. Clark’s trey was part of her five fourth quarter points, which helped Holbrook pull away in the final minutes of the fourth period. “Once again we struggled a little from the free throw line early, but it sure was nice to see some of our three-point shots finally go in. It’s been a long time since we hit that many treys in a game,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “They did a good job defensively on Madison, but other girls stepped up offensively and Madi still did her job on the boards. Ariyana and Twyla picked up the scoring slack, which is what good teams can do. We have several girls who are capable each night of putting points on the board, they just have to play with confidence. “Like the Chinle win, we didn’t do too many fancy things on defense, and got the job done.” Clark and Pratt led the Roadrunners in scoring with 11 each. Chappell had 10. Pacheco, Kee and Smith each made a three-point shot. Rayanna Wauneka hit for two and Dakota Dick netted one free throw. As a team, Holbrook made six treys, but went just 10 for 22 at the line. Winslow was led by Yazzie with 14 points. Danielle James added 8; Brianna Little, 6; Justin Butterfield, 4; and Talyna Waconda, 2. The Bulldogs made four three-point shots and went 4 for 5 at the line. The win was the Roadrunners’ 20th of the season against four losses. They are now 12-3 in power point contests.
