By Greg Perkins Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunners went 1-2 in three games played last week, picking up a big win over the Winslow Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday, then following that up with a bad loss to the Lady Lobos at Snowflake on Friday. On Saturday they were simply overmatched in their outing against the Lady Trojans at Valley Christian. Wednesday’s home game against the rival Bulldogs was one of Holbrook’s better games this season. With both teams rebuilding somewhat from players lost in the past couple of years, the Roadrunners built a five-point lead through the first eight minutes in front of a packed house. Ariyana Pratt and Aiyana Gary worked well inside against the Bulldogs, combining for 16 of Holbrook’s 27 first-half points. The Roadrunners led by six at the half, then pushed that margin to 12 with a strong third period run. Quanyyah Lester sparked that run, netting 11 of her 18 points in the quarter. Dakota Dick also sparked the Roadrunners with a game high eight assists. Pratt finished off Winslow in the fourth with 11 of her team high 23 points in the final eight minutes of Holbrook’s 69-56 win. Along with Pratt’s 23 points, Lester added 18; Tyler Pacheco, 9; Dick, 7; Gary, 6; Twyla Clark, 4; and Alishea Kee, 2. While Wednesday’s game was one end of the spectrum for the Holbrook squad, Friday’s game at Snowflake was the other. As well as the Roadrunners played against the Bulldogs was about as poor as they played against the Lobos, who beat Holbrook for the first time in the regular season in the past eight years, 56-54. Both teams played sloppy throughout the game, but Holbrook did manage to take a one-point lead in the final minute off Dishie Kinlicheenie’s three-point shot. That lead lasted just about 10 seconds, though, as Snowflake quickly shot a lay up on the other end. The Roadrunners had two scoring opportunities late, but both resulted in turnovers, which was pretty much the team of the night. Dick led Holbrook’s offense with 14 points, followed by Pacheco with 9; Pratt, 8; Gary, 7; Laurie Brown and Kinlicheenie, 5 each; and Shoshawna Jack and Alishea Kee each hit a trey. On Saturday the team traveled to face second ranked Valley Christian and outside of the first two minutes of the game, the Roadrunners provided little resistance against the powerful Trojan squad. Holbrook led 8-6 early, but finished the half trailing 38-10. The Birds played a little better in the second half against mostly Valley Christian reserves, but still headed for home with a resounding 58-31 loss. Freshman Sevanah Bitahy led Holbrook with 11 points. Dick added 8; Pratt, 4; Brown and Kee, 3 each; and Pacheco, 2. “The Winslow win was obviously nice, but it felt like we just gave it all back with the way we played in Snowflake on Friday,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “We still have eight games remaining and need to win as many of those eight as we can in order to secure both a spot in the six-team sectional tournament and the final 24-team state tournament field. These girls can get the job done if they will just believe in their abilities and work hard in practice and games.” The Roadrunners entered Tuesday’s home game against Tuba City ranked 20th in power points with a 4-6 record. Overall, they are now 10-11. After Tuesday’s game they will host Blue Ridge on Friday, Jan. 22, then will travel to Winslow on Saturday, Jan. 23. On Wednesday, Jan. 27, they will host Window Rock.
