By Greg Perkins The Lady Roadrunners’ season came to a close in the opening round of the Division III State Tournament last Saturday morning. Facing 20th seeded Thatcher, the 13th ranked Holbrook squad took the first lead of the game, breaking a scoreless tie in the second inning to lead 1-0. Thatcher knotted the game with a run in the top of the third only to see the Roadrunners battle back to take a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning. Regardless of the sport, mistakes in state tournament play prove to be costly and, unfortunately, for the Birds, their five errors in the fourth inning were quite expensive. Thatcher took advantage of the Holbrook miscues and scored nine runs, taking a commanding lead in the game. The underdogs added another run off yet another Holbrook error in the fifth, extending the margin to 11-3. One final run came in the sixth as the Lady Eagles advanced to the second round with a 12-3 win. The Eagles pounded out six extra base hits, including five doubles and one home run. They weren’t flawless on defense either, committing three errors. Their pitcher, Kamia Arbizo worked all seven innings. She gave up 11 hits to Holbrook and the three runs, only two of which were earned. She walked two and struck out two Roadrunners. Tess Baldonado took the loss in the circle for Holbrook. She gave up 12 runs, only six of those earned, on 13 hits. She fanned two and walked one. At the plate, Brandi Cline went 2 for 4 for Holbrook, as did Demo Perkins. Alizia Foster was 2 for 3. Holbrook secured the 13th seed thanks to winning the final regular season game at home against St. Johns last. Seniors Tess Baldonado, Alizia Foster, Demo Perkins and Amber Shelendewa were honored prior to the game. They and their teammates enjoyed a 17-0, five-inning win over the Lady Redskins for their final home game. Several players contributed at the plate for the Birds, led by Foster, whose grand slam was the highlight of the game. Davi Reyes went 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Mariah Cummings was 1 for 2 with an RBI and scored once. Foster finished 2 for 3 with four RBIs and scored three runs. Baldonado was 1 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and scored three runs. Shelendewa went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored twice. Kylah Spangler went 2 for 4 with a home run. Perkins was 2 for 2, drew two walks and scored three times. Alex Jeffers-Sample went 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and scored twice. Cline went 2 for 2, also hitting two doubles, and scored twice. Baldonado earned the win in the circle with five innings of work. She faced 19 batters, giving up only one hit with seven strikeouts and walked just two. Holbrook finished the season with an overall mark of 14-15-1.
