It wasn’t pretty for the Lady Roadrunners by any stretch of the imagination Tuesday night in Snowflake, but the Holbrook squad came away with a 47-34 win over the Lady Lobos. Holbrook looked good in the first two minutes and the last two minutes of the game, but those four minutes were sandwiched around a lot of sloppy play by both teams. Holbrook picked up four points each from Summer Olney and Teyah Goldtooth in the first period to lead 8-7. Cheyenne Lester turned some Holbrook steals into points in the second, scoring seven of her nine before halftime, helping Holbrook post a 21-16 lead at the break. In the third quarter Adriana Monroe gave Holbrook a spark on both ends of the floor, getting some key steals and netting all five of her points as the margin increased to 36-25 with one period left. In the final minutes Snowflake cut the margin to eight but that was as close as the Lobos would get. The Roadrunners played well in the final two or three minutes to pull away and secure their 12th win of the season. “This was truthfully an ugly game for both teams. We both played much better at the recent Valley Christian tournament, but neither team was able to carry that over to this contest,” said Holbrook Coach Greg Perkins. “We were able to take their leading scorer out of the mix with some good defense, but we simply missed too many shots and just didn’t play with the kind of intensity and effort we need to in order to compete with teams like Page. “We have to get back on track quickly. I’ve seen these girls play at a very high level; they just need to be more consistent with those kinds of efforts.” Goldtooth led Holbrook in scoring with 13 points. Cheyenne Lester added 9; Olney, 8, Rochelle Nez, 6; Monroe, 5; Airyana Pratt, 4; and Quanyyah Lester, 2. Holbrook made just 12 of 20 free throw attempts and hit only one three-point shot on a cold shooting night. The Lobos were paced by Tycee Coplan, who finished with 13, including a pair of three-point shots. Tori Flake added 11; Kadi Johnson, 6; and Audrey Livingston and Marisa Godfrey, 2 each. Snowflake made three of six free throw attempts and connected on three treys. With the win Holbrook improved to 12-5 and 4-2 in power point contests. Snowflake dropped to 7-8 and 3-2 in power point games. After hosting Round Valley on Thursday, the Roadrunners will host Page on Saturday, Jan. 10, with action beginning at 1 p.m. at the Tony Muñoz and Mike Starr Gyms. The junior varsity games will be at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 2:30 p.m. and the varsity boys at 4 p.m. The freshman boys will play at 2:30 p.m. and the freshman girls at 4 p.m. at Mike Starr Gym.
