The Lady Roadrunners suffered their first setback of the season Tuesday night in Winslow, coming home with a 56-52 loss. Holbrook played hard, building as much as a 13-point lead midway through the third period, but a solid performance from Winslow’s Shandiin Armao and the Roadrunners’ failure to make critical free throws in the fourth period took away what could have been a Holbrook victory. “The girls played hard, especially having to fight through foul trouble for the entire first half,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “These two teams know each other so well, it just comes down to which team can execute better. Tonight we did everything we needed to do to get the win except at the line. “We know Shandiin is a tremendous player and she really pulled her team back into the game in the second half. Despite her strong performance, we still could have sealed the win at the free throw line. Free throws are so important all the time, but on the road in close games in the fourth quarter they either win games for you or lose games for you. Tonight we didn’t make any free throws in the fourth period and it cost us what would have been a big early season win. To advance deep into the post-season where I think this team should be, we have to make free throws, period.” Both teams struggled from the floor early with the Lady Bulldogs holding an 8-6 first period lead. In the second, both teams garnered 16 points with Quanyyah Lester nailing three triples. Armao scored all of her team’s 11 points in the third period, but Holbrook doubled up the Bulldogs in the quarter behind a balanced attack led by Teyah Goldtooth, who netted two long range shots. With Holbrook missing free throws, Winslow chipped away at the lead in the fourth period until Armao hit a big three-point shot, putting the Bulldogs ahead for good inside the final minute. Armao led all scorers with 30 points. Adding to Winslow’s total were Ashley Johnson with 8; Kaelyn Bitsoi, 7; Adrianna Singer, 5; Jenna Yazzie, 4; and Michaela Bia, 2. Winslow made 21 of 31 free throws and hit one three-point shot. Holbrook was led by Goldtooth, who finished with 16 points. Lester added 11; Rochelle Nez, 8; Laurie Brown, 6; Cheyenne Lester, 5; Adriana Monroe, 4; and Summer Olney, 2. Holbrook made 10 of 16 free throws, missing all six in the fourth period. The Roadrunners knocked down six treys. Holbrook, now 2-1, will play in the Round Valley Tournament this weekend in Eagar, then will host Valley Sanders on Monday night, Dec. 15.
