Football Snowflake

The Snowflake Lobos won their first two gridiron contests in convincing fashion and, at least on paper, they were favored to move that mark to 3-0 with a win over Kirtland Central of New Mexico. The Broncos apparently didn’t get that memo and they turned the Lobos’ hoped for 3-0 start to a 2-1 beginning with a 21-14 upset at Lobo Stadium.

Jace Merrell opened the scoring for the Lobos on an eight-yard run and Jake Christensen’s two-point conversion gave Snowflake the early 8-0 lead.

The Broncos pulled within one with five minutes left in the period on a four-yard score. They kicked the point after to make the score 8-7.

Midway through the second period, Traegon Standerfer connected with Cody Fox on a 21-yard catch. The conversion failed, leaving Snowflake with a 14-7 lead. Late in the half Kirtland Central tied the game with a 30-yard touchdown pass and the ensuing point after kick.

The Broncos scored the game’s final points halfway through the third period on a 40-yard touchdown strike.

This week the Lobos will try to bounce back, although it will be in a tough spot as they travel to Thatcher to take on an unbeaten Eagles team fresh off a 42-41 win over rival Safford. Thatcher has averaged 45 points in its first three wins.
