In addition to staffing matters, the board addressed a number of other agenda items:

* Superintendent Robert Klein reported the district is undertaking a utility study with Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) to analyze energy usage and demand, and design a plan that will allow the district to efficiently manage utility costs now and in the future. Klein said the district is also exploring solar energy options.

* JCHS Principal Bryan Fields reported that Sen. Sylvia Allen recently toured the high school at the invitation of music students under the instruction of former music teacher Kyle Gardner. The students’ aim was to acquaint Allen with the arts programs and encourage her support of arts funding.

* According to Food Service Director Carol Henderson, the summer food service program has gotten off to a good start. On June 6, the first day of the program, staff served 169 meals. The federally funded program provides free lunches to children 18 and younger during the summer months to ensure kids are receiving at least one healthy meal each day. The program will continue through the end of July.

* The board congratulated Athletic Director Mike Sterkowitz on receiving the 2011 Pursuing Victory With Honor Administrator of the Year Award.

The governing board will hold a special meeting to approve the 2012 budget at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21. The next regular board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12.
