The Lady Wildcats head into their own tournament this weekend after earning a split in last week’s matches.

Hosting St. Michael last Thursday, the Joseph City squad rolled to a win in three games, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-13.

“We played really well in this match. Our team played with passion, intensity and with a lot of communication between players,” said Coach Darrel Mosier.

Last Friday Joseph City welcomed Mogollon and fell again to the talented Lady Mustang team in three close games, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20.

“We really didn’t play badly, we just never played with passion or intensity, and our court presence was never to a level we needed to beat one of the best teams in the division,” added the coach.

With the win the Lady Mustangs claimed the Gold Ball Trophy awarded to the team which scores the most combined points in their two meetings of the year. Mogollon outscored Joseph City 151-117 in this year’s matches.

Heading into this weekend’s 19th annual Joseph City Tournament, the Lady Wildcats boast an overall non-tournament record of 5-2 and are ranked 12th in power points in Division V.

Twelve teams will participate in the tournament, including Rock Point, Williams, Ash Fork, St. Michael, St. Johns and Hopi in Pool A, and Joseph City, Grand Canyon, Piñon, Many Farms, Seligman and Valley in Pool B. Games will begin at 3 o’clock this afternoon in both the elementary and high school gyms. Bracket play will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Tickets for the tournament are $4 per day or $6 for a two-day pass.

The Lady Wildcats’ next match will be on Friday, Sept. 30, at Rock Point.
