During the Holbrook Unified School District (HUSD) Board meeting held on Tuesday, Dec. 14, Superintendent Dr. Robbie Koerperich spoke with the board regarding the grant awarded to HUSD No. 3 to provide transportation stipends to transportation contractors (parents) of students enrolled through open enrollment to assist in providing transportation to and from bus stops.

The grant, administered by A for Arizona, was accepted by the board in the amount of $155,000. “This is only for open-enrollment parents, those that reside outside our district boundaries and travel greater distances. Right now, by statute (this) is limited to 20 miles one direction. This does allow it to be unlimited miles,” Dr. Koerperich stated. The grant will begin in January 2022 and go through December 2022.

Dr. Koerperich gave the report on the entitlement grants stating the following were received: a Title I grant for supplemental services, such as reading specialists, tutoring and summer schools, for $1.1 million; Title II grant for attracting and retaining highly qualified professionals including teachers and administrators for $122,000; and a Title III grant for English language learners for approximately $10,000. Grant funding for the School Safety Program was $256,000. Rural and Low-Income School funding was $44,000. International Development Association basic funds were $321,000 and IDA preschool funds were $8,000.

Holbrook Junior High School Principal Cheri Grau approached the board to discuss the plan for HJHS’s school wide social and emotional learning plan. “Sun Clan Consulting is a development organization dedicated to supporting kindergarten through 12th grade schools, staff and Native American students, as well as they provide engagement and empowerment training.” Grau stated. HJHS plans to do a workshop on Friday, Jan. 14, where students can practice and implement skills of leadership with supportive and trusted adults.
