Holbrook Unified School District was the recipient of four new buses thanks to funds provided to the State of Arizona as a result of the Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Environmental Mitigation Trust to fund Lower-Emission School Bus Program. “We are very excited about the opportunity to purchase four new buses from the Volkswagen settlement. The new buses will free up budget capacity for other projects that we normally have dedicated to maintaining our bus fleet each year. On typical years we purchase two new buses so this will help us span a couple years for bus purchasing ensuring our students are provided safe and reliable transportation,” stated Superintendent Dr. Robbie Koerperich.

The funds come from the $59 million the state received as part of the nationwide settlement with Volkswagen, half of which Gov. Doug Ducey has allotted to provide buses to districts where at least 60 percent of the students come from families whose income qualifies them for free or reduced priced lunches. Winslow School District will also receive four new buses, with none of the funds coming from the taxpayers.

For HUSD, this is a much-needed gift from the state. “Spanning over 1,500 square miles, running over 25 buses daily and accumulating a half-million miles a year is a challenge for HUSD No. 3. The news of this award was well received,” added Koerperich. The four buses will cost $440,000 and will be diesel powered.
