It was the jury’s unanimous decision Aug. 28 to sentence former Holbrook resident Bryan Hulsey to death for his role in the murder of Glendale police officer Anthony Holly.
Hulsey clapped and told the jury, “Good job,” twice as the verdict was read after three days of deliberation in Maricopa County Superior Court. Judge Joseph Kreamer also sentenced Hulsey to nine years in prison on one count of attempted first-degree murder of the other officer involved in the incident, with that sentence to run consecutive to his death sentence.
Last month Hulsey was convicted for the 2007 shooting of Holly during a routine traffic stop after Holly responded to a call as backup for another officer. Testimony indicated that while Holly was removing occupants from the vehicle, one of them, Hulsey, removed a gun from his waistband and shot four times, with one of the bullets striking the officer in the face. Holly, who was 24 years old, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The documents from trial indicate that Hulsey will be put to death by lethal injection at a date yet to be determined. This decision marks an end to the longest unresolved capital murder case in the state’s history.
