Holbrook’s boys’ soccer team opened the season last week picking up their first ever win over Northland Prep in a match played in Flagstaff on Sept. 3. The Roadrunners have had close matches with Northland Prep, but were never able to come out on top until this match. Northland opened the scoring early in the match, but Theron Johns tied the game later in the first half. The Spartans moved back in front to lead 2-1 at the half.

Johns picked up his second goal of the match early in the second tying the game at 2-2. That was followed a few minutes later by Alex Smith’s go-ahead goal. Northland Prep forged a tie late in the match to send the match into overtime sessions. Micah McClellan put Holbrook ahead in the first overtime period. In the second overtime Johns earned his first hat trick of the year icing the game for Holbrook with the 5-3 double overtime win. Jimmy Saxton was the winning goal keeper for the Birds who put together a solid team effort.

On Sept. 6 the Roadrunners moved their early season mark to 2-0 with a 4-2 win at Round Valley. Johns picked up where he left off in the first game scoring early in the match. James Ramirez took a long sideline throw in from Smith and found the back of the net increasing the margin to 2-0. Smith then earned his own goal making the lead 3-0 at the half.

The Roadrunners had several other scoring opportunities in the second half with three goals canceled due to off side violations. Johns followed up a Round Valley goal with his fifth in two games giving the Birds the 4-1 lead. Round Valley scored an insignificant goal late in the match resulting in Holbrook’s 4-2 win. Carlos Quintana played in goal for the team which had it’s second strong team effort moving to 2-0 on the season.

After playing at St. Johns on Sept. 9, the Roadrunners will have four matches at the Show Low tournament this weekend. Next Tuesday they host Round Valley for a rematch with the Elks.
