Students will begin school this fall on Wednesday, Aug. 3, according to the 2011-12 school calendar adopted by the Holbrook School District Governing Board on Tuesday.

Board members also adopted a calendar for school year 2012-13, which has students starting school on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012.

Both calendars include additional days in case of snow or other emergencies requiring a school closure. If those days are not needed, students will receive additional days off in the spring.

“Each of these calendars includes the requirements for 180 instructional days, and also have extra days added in anticipation of schedule changes due to weather or unforeseen occurrences,” Superintendent Robbie Koerperich noted. “In the event that the days are not needed for these occurrences, additional days have been designated as ‘no school’ days.”

In the 2011-12 calendar, there will be no school on the following days:

* Sept. 5 and 6, Labor Day and teacher in-service.

* Oct. 10-14, fall break.

* Nov. 11, Veterans Day

* Nov. 23-25, Thanksgiving break.

* Dec. 23-Jan. 6, Christmas break.

* Jan. 16, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

* Feb. 20, Presidents Day.

* March 26-30, spring break.

* April 6, Good Friday.

The last day of school will be Wednesday, May 25. High school graduation ceremonies are also set for May 25, however, May 26 is set as an alternate graduation date.

In September and February, half-days of school are planned for parent-teacher conferences. Conferences and half-days are set for Sept. 15 and 16, and Feb. 16 and 17.

Unused emergency days, which will result in no school only if the days are not used for snow closures or other emergencies, are set for April 20, May 4 and May 7.

A copy of the complete calendar, as well as the 2012-13 calendar, is available at the district office.

In other action March 8, the board:

* Accepted the resignation of Park Elementary School teacher Rebecca Frechette, effective March 18.

According to Frechette’s resignation letter, she is leaving the district in order to care for her child, who is experiencing medical problems.

* Approved use of Singapore Math.

* Approved the e2020 curriculum for grades six through 12.
