The fields, courts and trails at Holbrook High School will soon be populated with Roadrunner athletes participating in their respective 2018 fall sports.

Holbrook’s football team has another first time head coach in Larry Hayes. Hayes was an assistant on last year’s team and he takes over a roster depleted from the loss of 22 seniors last year. That team put up a record of just 2-8, so really this year’s unit has a good chance to improve on that mark with new blood both on the sidelines and on the field. One of last year’s standouts, Jeffrey Jones will once again be a player to watch for the Birds. Holbrook fans will get their first look at the new Roadrunners this Friday night when they host Chinle at Roadrunner Stadium.

Aaron LaRose picks up where she left off last year as the Lady Roadrunner Head Volleyball Coach. Last season she guided the team to an 8-13 record, which barely missed out on the state playoffs, losing to Florence in the 3A state play-in game. Like the football team, the volleyball squad will be rebuilding after losing six seniors who started most of last year’s matches. This year’s team is young but does have some returning players with experience led by the athletic Madison Chappell. The volleyball team will get things underway Aug. 28 when they host Ganado.

Holbrook’s soccer teams will once again be looking to move the programs forward. Tony Aguilera heads up the boys team which wants to rebound from last year’s winless campaign. This year’s team is small in numbers but they do have some experience to put on the field. The boys team opens the season at Ash Fork/Seligman on Aug. 27.

The girls soccer team is under the direction of Beth Baloo. Like the boys team they will also be hoping to put a mark in the win column, after going winless last season. The girls team opens the season at Northland Prep on Aug. 28.

Cross country runners will be under the guidance of Head Coach Nick Moyte. The Roadrunners do have some quality runners returning with experience from last year. The cross country teams will kick their season off on Aug. 28 at the Hopi Invitational meet.
