Former Holbrook Chamber of Commerce board member Mindy Moyle has been hired as the chamber’s new executive director.
Moyle returned to Holbrook after moving away for a few years after she graduated from high school. Now she’s back, bringing her gained experience and wisdom to help promote Holbrook’s local economy.
Traditionally, a chamber of commerce works to help promote local business through advertising, development and networking. Because Holbrook relies on tourism to help stimulate the local economy, the Holbrook Chamber also works with the city to promote tourism by organizing events like the cultural dances, Wild West Days and last weekend’s Color Run.
Moyle plans mixers for business members to get to know each other, and encourages the members to utilize the power of suggestion by promoting other businesses and tourist activities to their customers. New businesses joining the chamber can start strong by using the chamber to get the word out about grand openings and to learn what worked for already established businesses.
The chamber is also a good place to start when seeking advice if you are interested in opening a business in the Holbrook area, as staff and members have a vast knowledge of what works and what doesn’t in the city’s unique business climate.
Moyle’s vision for the future of the chamber includes refocusing on supporting business owners through development with workshops and creating more networking opportunities. Working with about half the budget of the previous year, she is also focused on finding more funding for the chamber. In the past, funds were received from the city’s one percent Lodgers Tax, but those funds have been reduced for the chamber over the last couple years and now more of the capital for events and activities must come from membership fees and fundraising.
Moyle plans to keep doing what has already been established and has some ideas that she would like to put into action. One such idea would be to get businesses and vendors to offer a discount to customers when they bring in a receipt from another local business or hotel. This would help keep more tourist dollars within the city. She also hopes to look into government grants. For now, she encourages everyone to shop local as much as possible, and continues to share her wealth of knowledge with everyone she meets about local things to see and do, and where to eat and shop, too.
