The Holbrook Junior High School is in the process of implementing the AVID-Advancement via Individual Advancement program. HJHS Principal Dr. Jeri McKinnon and a team of teachers will be attending the national AVID conference next month in San Diego to learn more about the program.
McKinnon explained that there are four components to AVID: Teacher effectiveness, student learning, leadership and equity.
“The area that I am most excited about is teacher effectiveness. I have been a principal for 13 years and I can honestly testify that effectiveness in the classroom is key to a child’s success in school. If this program can make every teacher effective then it will be worth the investment,” stated McKinnon.
According to Superintendent Dr. Koerperich, the AVID program focuses on college and career readiness skills for all students by creating systems, leadership, instruction and a culture of college and career readiness. Funding for this professional development will come from Title I and Title II funding resources. The board approved the travel.
Dr. Robbie Koerperich also informed the board that the district has submitted a request to the School Facilities Board for a Building Renewal Grant for roofing assessment at HJHS and heating, ventilation and air conditioning; as well as a roofing assessment at Holbrook High School. To do so, the board approved the School Facility Board terms and conditions and authorized Superintendent Dr. Robbie Koerperich to be the authorized signer for the remainder of this project.
