The Holbrook Roadrunner soccer team started the season on a down note, dropping the season opener to visiting Blue Ridge 9-1 on Aug. 30.

After playing at Payson on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Roadrunners will be in action with four matches at the Show Low Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8 and 9. They open tournament play on Friday morning vs. Rehoboth Christian in a 9:30 match.

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the Roadrunners will host Round Valley, followed by a second home match against Snowflake on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The Lady Roadrunners soccer team fell to visiting Camp Verde Aug. 31 by a final score of 5-1. Holbrook played well through the first 20 minutes of the season opener, battling the Camp Verde to a scoreless tie. Holbrook got its lone goal when a Holly Hill shot attempt rebounded off the Camp Verde keeper and Brianna Richards put the ricochet in the back of the net.

“The girls looked really good for the first game. We were happy with the girls’ performance. We just have to play more aggressive,” said Assistant Coach Victor Paz.

“We currently have 26 girls on the team, eight of whom are seniors. These girls are tough and we’ve shown we can compete.”

After hosting Blue Ridge on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Lady Birds will travel to St. Johns on Saturday, Sept. 9. On Tuesday, Sept. 12, they play at Show Low.
