Greyhills was a very gracious Homecoming opponent for the Roadrunners last Friday night. The Knights offered little resistance to the home team, which routed them 65-0. With only 17 players on the roster, including seven freshmen, Greyhills was simply overmatched from the opening kickoff.
The Knights started the game with a fumble on their second play from scrimmage. Holbrook converted one play later on a 10-yard run by Shane McGraw. Cade Maestas scored the conversion run and Holbrook was up 8-0 less than a minute into the game.
The Roadrunners’ second possession began at the Knight 40 yard line and took only three plays before Maestas scored on a 29-yard run. His conversion run made the score 16-0 midway through the first period. Just over a minute later the Birds pushed the margin to 22-0 on a 17-yard pass from Maestas to McGraw.
Holbrook blocked Greyhills’ first punt attempt and quickly scored on a 17-yard run by Zakhari Waits, advancing the lead to 30-0. The Birds scored once more in the first period at the 1:33 mark on a nine-yard run by Julian Garcia. The two-point conversion made the score 38-0 at the close of the first quarter.
Greyhills picked up its initial first down of the game early in the second, but it was merely a moral victory as the Knights never got close to the goal line throughout the night.
Following a Miah Perry interception Holbrook scored in two plays, making the score 45-0.
In the fourth quarter Holbrook found the end zone three times. Delano Anaya ran in from five yards out, Jeffrey Jones scooted through defenders from 33 yards out and Darrin Tyler scored a defensive touchdown in the game’s final minute, making the final score 65-0.
Maestas completed seven of 13 passes for 57 yards. Holbrook used 13 different ball carriers, who collectively gained 267 yards on 24 attempts, led by Garcia who rushed three times for 62 yards with two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Roadrunners picked off the overmatched Greyhills quarterback six times.
With the win the Roadrunners move their season mark to 3-2. This week they will travel to Red Mesa to face a Redskin team that has an unimpressive 4-1 season record.
