The winter sports seasons get underway this weekend with both Roadrunner basketball teams in action at a five-team scrimmage on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Sedona. The Holbrook boys’ team will begin their scrimmage contests at 10 a.m., followed by the girls at 10:30. Each team will compete for six quarters throughout Saturday morning and early afternoon. Other schools participating in the scrimmage include Sedona, Mingus, Tuba City and Casteel.
The Lady Roadrunners will open their season at the Queen Creek Turkey Shootout on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 21 and 22. Holbrook joins the 16-team field as one of the smaller schools and will face 6A Basha in an opening round game at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
The Roadrunners will play in the Sierra Vista Tournament on Thanksgiving weekend.
Following their Queen Creek tourney the ladies will travel to Lakeside on Friday, Dec. 2, for a girls night only against the Blue Ridge Lady Yellowjackets, then join the boys team for a long trip to Safford the following day. Both teams will play in the Round Valley Tournament scheduled Dec. 8-10. The first home game for this year’s Roadrunner basketball teams will be on Dec. 16 when they host Blue Ridge.
Both teams are coming off state tournament trips a year ago. The Roadrunners lost six seniors from a squad that advanced to the second round. The Lady Roadrunners fell in the first round to Kingman, but have nine returning varsity players plus a couple of new faces.
