District III Navajo County Supervisor Jason Whiting (left) passes a can to District II Supervisor Jesse Thompson during the Board of Supervisors meeting this week in an effort to raise funds for the Bread of Life Mission in Holbrook on behalf of the county in a friendly competition between the county and City of Holbrook to assist the mission, which serves homeless people from throughout the county.
It’s on! Navajo County District III Supervisor Jason Whiting issued a challenge during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting to the City of Holbrook to see who could raise the most funds to contribute to the Bread of Life Mission in Holbrook by Oct. 3, when a fundraiser dinner is being held at the mission.
The friendly competition between the county and the city came about after Whiting toured the city with Mayor Bobby Tyler. He was impressed by the mayor’s love for his community and the services provided by the mission.
“We drove through the community and stopped to visit with local business owners. It was apparent that Mayor Tyler has a great deal of love for his community and the people in it,” said Whiting. “After seeing the services offered at the mission and how great the need is for those services, with more people than beds, I think we can do something to help them out.”
The men volunteered Sheriff KC Clark to receive a pie in the face if the city contributes the most funds, whereas the recipient of the pie for the city will be Holbrook Police Chief Mark Jackson if the county should win the competition.
A collection can for the city is available at the city hall, located at 465 First Ave. For the county, a collection can is available at the administrative office county governmental complex, located at 100 E. Code Talker Drive in Holbrook.
