Cardboard boats, face paint, watermelon and fireworks marked Winslow’s Fourth of July as residents turned out for a full day of Independence Day traditions despite the holiday heat.

The day got underway at the city’s outdoor pool, where the Winslow Recreation Department held its second annual cardboard boat race. The celebration later moved to the Hayden Walton Sports Complex, where the Winslow Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual community picnic. Families enjoyed free pulled pork sandwiches, games and activities while kids darted through the nearby splash pads to cool off.

The day capped off after dark at Emil Nasser Stadium, where the community gathered for free hot dogs and a fireworks show. It was a fitting finale to a full day of hometown tradition.
